Sustainable San Marcos

Indigenous Culture Institute

Based in San Marcos, this institute is dedicated to  preserving the culture of the nearly 600 Native American groups that have called central and southern Texas and northeastern Mexico home, collectively known as Coahuiltecans.

“We strive to unite human-kind in seeking ancestral knowledge for the sake of our continued survival”.

Programs:

1. Sacred Springs Powwow

When: October 1st and 2nd, 2022

Where: 201 San Marcos Springs Drive San Marcos, Texas

This event is a celebration of indigenous cultures! It will host hundreds of dancers, drum groups, and singers as well as vendors, raffles and native education.

2. Indigenous People’s Day

Every second Monday of October

When: October 10th, 2022

The first blessing is held at 10:00 A.M. on the cement platform at the edge of the San Marcos River headwaters.

A second blessing is held at 5:30 PM at the Reburial Grounds established by the City of San Marcos.

3. Reburial

  • The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) databases list more than 7 million Native American remains kept in “collections” by universities, museums, and federal and state departments.

  • As of 2015, the remains of 3,454 ancestral native americans were removed from our Texas sacred grounds. Over 2,400 of those ancestors are at UT-Austin.

  • The Miakan-Garza tribe sought three of those remains for reburial. On June 3, 2020, UT denied the tribe’s request to rebury their ancestors.

  • On September 7th the community and UT students launched a campaign for the return of the ancestors.

  • September 25th President Hartzell emailed a letter to the Miakan-Garza Band promising “to offer the remains promptly for reburial.”

  • On October 2nd, 2020, UT-Legal sent a letter to the NAGPRA staff claiming “no group has claimed the remains” this is incorrect.

  • Miakan-Garza tribe has not been consulted by UT on the final disposition of the ancestors.
